What is a semen analysis?

Semen analysis

Semen analysis: Semen Test Full Lab Test Information -A semen analysis, also called a sperm count, measures the quantity and quality of a man's sperm and sperm. Semen is the thick, white fluid that the penis expels during a man's sexual climax (orgasm). This expulsion of semen is called ejaculation. Semen contains sperm, the cells of man that carry genetic material. When a sperm joins a woman's egg, it forms an embryo (the first stage of the fetus's development).

A low sperm count or abnormal movement of the sperm can make it difficult for a man to make a woman pregnant. The inability to conceive a baby is called infertility. Infertility can affect both men and women. Male infertility is the reason why one-third of couples can not have children. A semen analysis can help discover the cause of male infertility.

Other names: sperm count, sperm analysis, seminal analysis, male fertility test, semen analysis, spermiogram

For what do you use it?

Semen analysis is used to find out if the cause of a man's infertility is a problem with semen or sperm. The test can also be used to see if a vasectomy has worked. A vasectomy is a surgery to prevent pregnancy by blocking the release of sperm during sexual intercourse.

Why do I need a semen analysis?

You may need a semen analysis if you and your partner have been trying to conceive for at least 12 months without success.

If you have had a vasectomy recently, you may need this test to confirm that the procedure worked.

What happens during a semen analysis?

You must give a semen sample. The most common way to give the sample is to go to a private place in your doctor's office or health professional and masturbate in a sterile container. You must not use any lubricant. If masturbation is against your religious or other beliefs, you may be able to collect your sample during intercourse with a special type of condom. Talk to your doctor or health professional if you have questions or concerns about giving the sample.

You must give two or more additional samples within a week or two. That's because the sperm count and semen quality can vary from day today.

Will I have to do something to prepare for the test?

You should avoid sexual activity, including masturbation, for 2 to 5 days before giving the sample. This will help your sperm count to be at its highest level.

Does this test have any risk?

Semen analysis

Semen analysis has no known risk.

What do the results mean?
The results of semen analysis include measurements of quantity and quality of semen and sperm. These include:

  • Volume: the amount of semen
  • Spermatic count: number of sperm per milliliter
  • Spermatic movement: also known as motility
  • Sperm shape: also known as morphology
  • White blood cells: that can be a sign of infection

If any of these results are not normal, that may indicate a fertility problem. But other factors, including the use of alcohol, tobacco, and some medicinal herbs, can affect your results. If you have questions about your results or your fertility, check with your doctor or health professional.

If your semen analysis was done to verify if your vasectomy was effective, your doctor will try to detect the presence of sperm. If sperm is not found, you and your partner should be able to stop using other contraceptive methods. If sperm is found, you may have to repeat the tests until your sample has no sperm. In the meantime, you and your partner should take precautions to avoid pregnancy.

Is there anything else I need to know about a semen analysis?
Many male fertility problems can be treated. If the results of your semen analysis were not normal, your doctor or health professional may ask for more tests to decide the best treatment.
